I kind of love cleaning out garages. When I go for walks and other people’s garage doors are up, I always have to look in because I am so curious what they look like. Some are pretty organized with shelves and storage bins, and some are major disaster areas. I hate to call someone out, but there is at least one garage near me that is packed from the house right up to the garage door. I don’t even think there is a path to walk through!
Now is the Time
Our garage really isn’t all that bad, but it could use some work. We have only lived here for a few years, so there isn’t a crazy amount of stuff accumulated out there. Even so, recently I have been thinking about what organizing projects I would like to complete and the garage is definitely on the list.
It is the perfect time of year for garage organization. The weather is just right for being outside, and with the holidays coming up, I would love to get everything organized to make the Christmas decorating time this year much more enjoyable. It has been on my mind for a few weeks now, but I keep telling myself I don’t really have time to take on such a large project with all of the other things I am trying to get done on top of working full-time.
Yesterday I decided that it is very unlikely that I am going to just happen across this blissful day where I have nothing else to do but organize the garage before Thanksgiving. I will just have to make the time to do it.
Organization Supplies: Let the Fun Begin!
I visited The Container Store while I was out shopping this weekend. I love going to The Container Store, mainly for inspiration and just the overall organization vibe. I rarely buy anything there, but it gets me in the organizing mood. I looked at some storage bins, but didn’t really like the options they had to choose from. When I got home, I realized that I could just get started with some empty bins we already had from moving sitting in a stack out in the garage.
Since I had a few other things I wanted to get done today, I decided I would just get a lite start, organizing loose items into empty bins and getting a sense of what I will need to buy. After being out there for only about an hour or so, I was really surprised that I was so tired and sore. I am glad I didn’t expect myself to get the whole thing done in one day, because I very likely would have ended up feeling discouraged afterwards.
My next step will be to finish going through a few more bins, and then determine what I need to buy. We also found a designer who makes really cute labels for a few kitchen organization projects, so I am figuring out what categories I want to get labels for to place an order. The garage vision is to have everything neatly tucked away in a labeled storage bin or cabinet. I have been taking pictures along the way today, and hope to post a garage organization post or series soon when it is complete.
I’m glad I got started today. I tend to put things off because they seem too big and intimidating, and then they just hang over my head and I feel helpless to take any steps forward. I am hoping that I will be able to do one small thing, and then another, and another, until I can walk out to the garage and see the kind of garage I always dreamed would be attached to the house I am living in. Namaste!
